SAN DIEGO SIERRA CLUB APPOINTS JIM
BELL TO SAN DIEGO REGIONAL ENERGY
ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Jim Bell, an internationally respected ecological designer,
author, and eco-energy expert has been appointed by the San Diego
Sierra Club to represent the Chapter on the San Diego Regional
Energy Advisory Committee. The Committee has been charged with
updating the Regional Energy Plan.
The current REP was adopted by the SANDAG Board of Directors in
December 1994. The REP analyzes overall energy supply and
consumption in the San Diego region and recommends actions.
According to San Diego Regional Energy Office < www.sdenergy.org>
fundamental changes warrant updating the region's energy policy
planning document to reflect the realities of the new energy markets
and recent and ongoing updates of the Regional Transportation Plan
and the REGION2020 Regional Growth Management Strategy."
As a long term member and volunteer for the Club, Bell was the
ideal choice to represent the Sierra Club in this process. For 26
years, Bell has been advocating energy self-sufficiency for San
Diego and the San Diego/Tijuana region as an economic and security
strategy to improve local economic resiliency by making our region
more energy and energy price secure. Bell notes, "Becoming
energy self-sufficient will return the 5 billion dollars we
currently export out of our region each year to pay for the energy
we import, to our local economy. Reclaiming this 5 billion dollars
will increase regional economic activity by 10 to 20 billion
dollars each year, increasing regional economic activity by as
much as 20 percent. Economists call this the multiplier effect.
Becoming energy self-sufficient will also make our economy
invulnerable to energy supply shortages or cutoffs and fluctuating
energy prices."
As an ecological designer, Jim works with developers and various
public and private agencies. He's currently designing an
ecologically sustainable hotel for Terra Vista Management and is
the Co-project Coordinator for the Ocean Beach People's Food
Cooperative's new store.
His honors include: The Society of Energy Engineer's Environmental
Professional of the year for the South Western States, a
"Beyond War" award and a City of San Diego Water
Conservation Design Award for one of his projects. In 1996 and
2000 Jim was a candidate for Mayor of San Diego and has served on
numerous Coop and non-profit boards. Bell directs the Ecological
Life Systems Institute and has a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Arts
and Art Sciences from SDSU. He currently hosts "Jim Bell
& Common Sense," on KFMB, 760 on the AM radio dial,
Sunday evenings from 10 to 11 PM.
The San Diego Chapter of the Sierra Club has more than 15,000
members. Founded by John Muir in California in 1892, the Sierra
Club http://www.sierraclub.org
is the largest environmental membership group in the country with
more than 500,000 members nationwide.
"Nothing will be done,
unless WE get into action, and action can take many forms... " Jim
Bell, 1994
